Our project treats the railway complex not as just a railway station, but as the MAIN GATES through which Astana can be accessed. The gates will appear in the perspective of one of the city’s busiest highways.

The location of the station at the crossroads of the city’s main routes, at the point where the railway tracks, the highway and the metro intersect, will transform it into a huge transport hub. At such points of concentration of people and business activity, it is natural for multi-purpose buildings to appear. In our proposal, the train station is supported by a retail and commercial volume that will be placed to the other side of the tracts, but at the same time will be interconnected to the station to form a single complex.

The arch of the MAIN GATES of Astana will rise in the perspective of Mustafina Street on the same principle as the Grand Arch in la Defence district of Paris in the perspective of Champs-Elysees Avenue. The new station will be integrated into the system of the city’s dominants and will continue the row of its iconic buildings seen from Mustafina Street: MAIN GATES OF ASTANA – THE PALACE OF SCHOOLCHILDREN – PRESIDENT’S PALACE – THE HOUSE OF GOVERNMENT, etc.

The most expressive and significant constituent in the architecture of the complex is the transparent roof structure in the shape of a hyperbolic paraboliod. The arch rises over the station and the roads leading to it as if a rainbow over a steppe accentuating the vastness of the city’s territory. Flowing outlines of the arch remind the viewer of the hills and kurgans of the Kazakh landscape. At the same time, the outlines of the arch share the structural hardness of a saddle and the elasticity of a spring.
